Background
Previously, I calculated summary statistics on pep band gigs for this purpose. Using the average number of gigs attended for each type, and the number of times each song is played at each gig type, I can calculate the average number of times each song is played in a year (and subsequently in four years).
For example:
The average band member plays 1.22 volleyball gigs per year. At a typical volleyball gig, we play "TAG" 5 times, "Here Comes Carolina" 4 times, "Hark the Sound" once, and "Carolina Victory" once. This then is multiplied out for one year, and then over four years like so:
Type | Avg Gigs | HC | CV | TAG | HS
One gig | VB | 1.22 | 4 | 1 | 5 | 1 |
1 year | 4.89 | 1.22 | 6.11 | 1.22
4 years | 19.55 | 4.89 | 24.43 | 4.89 |
I then can sum over all gigs, and I have figures on every type of sporting event the band performs at, including:
Football (Home, Away), Men's Basketball (Home, Postseason), Women's Basketball, Men's Soccer, Women's Soccer, Volleyball, Field Hockey, Softball, Gymnastics, Men's Lacrosse, Women's Lacrosse, and extra performances (like makeup gigs).
Finally, the totals (for one year):
Here Comes | Carolina Victory | TAG | Hark the Sound |
156.17 | 49.12 | 339.17 | 46.28 |
And the totals, for a band member over four years:
Here Comes | Carolina Victory | TAG | Hark the Sound |
665.40 | 237.22 | 1,397.41 | 225.83 |
Note: This factors in the additional home men's basketball games seniors get to attend, as well as travel to men's/women's tournaments.
So the average band member plays TAG almost 1,400 times over the course of their college career.
